Steam

From Frostpunk 2 Wiki and Guides

Steam is a Fuel Resource that Generators can consume to produce Heat. It is less energy-dense than Oil.

Using Steam[edit | edit source]

In The City, the Generator must be upgraded with Adaptive Pumps (the Adaptation route) before it can use Steam, after which it produces one unit of Heat per unit of Steam (with later upgrades allowing you to increase that efficiency). The Progress upgrade path (starting with Oil Pumps) prevents The City from using Steam directly, though most Steam Deposits are located in Geothermal Fields that provide a passive Temperature bonus to Districts constructed within their areas of effect regardless of what Fuel(s) the Generator can use.

All Colonies have Generators that act like they have the Adaptive Pumps upgrade and can thus use Steam, except for The Old Dreadnought which can only use Oil. The heating efficiency of Colony Generators cannot be increased.

Accessing Steam[edit | edit source]

In Story Mode, Steam Deposits can only be found in Winterhome, while in Utopia Builder Mode some maps have The City start out with access to one or more deposits and many Colony sites also have one or more deposits. Steam Deposits can be extracted by constructing Extraction Districts on them, and Buildings like Geothermal Plants can greatly increase the extraction rate from such deposits. Unlike other Resource Deposits, all Steam Deposits are infinite and do not require (or allow) the construction of Deep Melting Drills. Steam also cannot be Stockpiled or shipped between The City and its Colonies.

There is no way to get Steam from the Frostland.
