Coal

From Frostpunk 2 Wiki and Guides

Coal is a Fuel Resource that Generators can burn to produce Heat. It is less energy-dense than Oil.

Using Coal[edit | edit source]

In The City, the Generator starts out being able to produce one unit of Heat per unit of Coal. The Adaptation upgrade path (starting with Adaptive Pumps) lets you increase the amount of Heat per unit of Coal, while also allowing you to use Oil and Steam if they are available. The Progress upgrade path (starting with Oil Pumps) prevents The City from using Coal directly; however, Buildings like Coal Liquefactors let you convert Coal into Oil to maintain its usefulness.

All Colonies have Generators that act like they have the Adaptive Pumps upgrade and can thus use Coal, except for The Old Dreadnought which can only use Oil. The heating efficiency of Colony Generators cannot be increased.

Accessing Coal[edit | edit source]

In Story Mode, New London starts with access to limited Coal Deposits that can be extracted by constructing Extraction Districts on them, and Buildings like Coal Mines can greatly increase the extraction rate from such deposits. Once those run out, you must find new sources of Fuel in the Frostland. In Utopia Builder Mode, on most maps The City starts with similarly-limited local deposits, though some also contain Deep Deposits of Coal; Colony sites may have some finite or infinite deposits as well.

In the Frostland, you can also find Outpost sites that provide varying quantities of Coal, a few of which may be upgradable into Settlements to provide a permanent supply. Your scouts may also find many sites that give a one-time shipment of Coal instead of an ongoing supply.
